Royal Northern Sinfonia
- Conductor: Janusz Piotrowicz
- Cello: Jamal Aliyev
Overview
- SIBELIUS: The Swan of Tuonela
- ELGAR Cello Concerto
- SIBELIUS Symphony No 1 in E minor
An evening of music to grip the emotions and enchant the ear, full of mysticism and pathos, beginning with the haunting tone poem, the Swan of Tuonela from Finnish mythology. Jamal Aliyev, who made his acclaimed BBC Proms début last year ‘played with grave tenderness’ (Bachtrack) plays Elgar's heartrending masterpiece, written in sorrow and anguish at the human tragedy of the Great War. A wistful clarinet solo opens the vast Romantic symphony of Sibelius in which he evokes with rapturous melody and passion the grandeur of the North. Infused with patriotic fervour, the music builds to an electrifying climax.
