A classical farcical comedy by Oscar Wilde, described by him as ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’. The Importance of being Ernest is one of Wilde’s wittiest plays with themes of mistaken identity, the English class system and the vanity and silliness of Victorian high society. Despite being over 100 years old, the play’s cleverness, biting humour and distinctive characters (especially Lady Bracknell) continue to ensure it entertains contemporary theatre-goers just as much as its original audience.
